Meru Man Behind 'Baba While You Were Away' Slogan to Be Consoled By Oburu Oginga at Wife’s Burial

Japheth Muroko, widely known for coining the emotional phrase “Baba while you were away” in honour of Raila Odinga, is set to receive a special visit from Oburu Oginga during the burial of his wife in Meru.

Muroko, who became a public figure for his heartfelt support of the late opposition leader, recently revealed the tragic coincidence that his wife passed away on the same day as Raila — October 15, 2025.

Speaking to the media, he shared that his late wife had been battling health complications since 2021, which he linked to issues that arose after she received the COVID-19 vaccine.

A known polygamist, Muroko emotionally recalled how difficult the loss had been, expressing his gratitude for the late Raila Odinga, who had nominated him for a position at the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

He praised Raila not just as a political giant but also as a shrewd businessman who changed many lives.

In a show of solidarity, Oburu Oginga, Raila’s elder brother, is expected to attend the burial ceremony in Meru to console Muroko.

The gesture comes as a symbolic acknowledgement of Muroko’s loyalty to the Odinga family, particularly during a period of shared grief.

The “Baba while you were away” slogan has become synonymous with Muroko’s loyalty and emotional connection to Raila Odinga’s political journey. As he lays his wife to rest, Kenyans from across the country have expressed sympathy and admiration for his resilience.

The upcoming visit by Oburu is seen not only as a condolence call but also as a testament to the bonds Raila forged with ordinary Kenyans whose lives he touched.
