Witness Reveals He Was Given Ksh 50,000 to Trail Late MP Ong’ondo Were

Fresh details have emerged in the murder trial of former Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were. A protected witness told the Kibera High Court that he was paid Ksh50,000 to follow the lawmaker’s vehicle on the day he was killed.

The witness testified under a pseudonym as part of the Witness Protection Programme. He said he initially believed he had been hired for a routine motorcycle transport assignment.

According to the testimony, he received a phone call on the morning of April 30, 2025. The caller instructed him to travel to several locations before settling on a meeting point in Jacaranda Estate.

Upon arrival, the witness was allegedly offered Ksh50,000 for the assignment. He was also given a separate SIM card that would be used for communication throughout the operation.

The court heard that the witness was not informed about the nature of the task. He only discovered its connection to the murder after the shooting had already occurred.

The witness said he transported a passenger to a sports facility in Buruburu. Shortly afterward, he was instructed to follow a white vehicle moving through different parts of Nairobi.

The pair later stopped along Jogoo Road before heading to the city centre. They reportedly spent several hours waiting before receiving further instructions.

According to the testimony, the witness was later directed to follow another vehicle. During the operation, the passenger briefly left the motorcycle and walked away.

Moments later, gunshots were heard in the area. The passenger returned shortly afterward and instructed the witness to leave the scene.

Later that evening, the witness received a phone call from the person who had arranged the assignment. He was told to switch on the television, where news reports confirmed that Ong’ondo Were had been shot dead.

The witness testified that he recognised the vehicle shown in the reports. The following day, he allegedly received the promised payment and destroyed the SIM card used during the assignment.

Prosecutors believe the killing was part of a coordinated plot involving multiple individuals. The case continues in court as investigators seek to establish the full chain of events surrounding the murder.
