Varsity Student Hesbon Mauti Charged Over Offensive Ruto Remarks, Freed on Sh5,000 Cash Bail

A university student has been arraigned in court for allegedly using offensive language directed at President William Ruto and members of his family.

Hesbon Mauti Thomas appeared before the court to face charges stemming from controversial comments published on digital media platforms.

The prosecution alleged that the accused posted offensive content explicitly targeting the Head of State alongside his children, Charlene Ruto and George Ruto. The post quickly circulated online, prompting law enforcement officers to track down and arrest the student.

Appearing before the magistrate, Thomas denied all charges leveled against him and entered a plea of not guilty. 

Sifuna was listed as a candidate under the Linda Mwananchi party, while Ruto was presented under the United Democratic Alliance.

The results are likely to generate fresh debate about Sifuna’s growing national political profile and his possible plans for the 2027 presidential race.

The Nairobi senator has established himself as one of the most vocal critics of the Ruto administration. He has frequently challenged government policies while taking an active role in political discussions across the country.

His visibility has also increased through public rallies, media appearances and activities linked to the Linda Mwananchi movement.

Despite the growing speculation, Sifuna has not formally announced a presidential bid for the 2027 election.

The latest poll should also be interpreted with caution because it was conducted through social media.

Online surveys can attract organised voting and may not accurately represent the views of the entire Kenyan population. Participation is also voluntary, meaning respondents select themselves rather than being chosen through a scientific sampling process.

As a result, the figures may reflect political sentiment among active online users rather than provide a definitive forecast of the eventual election outcome.

Ruto remains a significant political force and is expected to seek another term in office. His established nationwide political network and support base could play a major role in the next election.

For Sifuna, however, the poll highlights the growing attention surrounding his political future.

With the 2027 election still ahead, alliances, party structures and voter preferences could change considerably. 

More scientifically conducted opinion surveys will be needed to determine whether Sifuna can translate the reported online support into broader nationwide backing.
