National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has escalated his political battle with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, announcing plans to take legal action over allegations made against him regarding the upcoming Ol Kalou by-election.
In a strongly worded statement, Ichung’wah accused Gachagua of spreading “false, reckless and malicious” claims after alleging that he had attempted to influence the electoral process.
The Kikuyu MP said the accusations had crossed the line from political criticism into defamation, prompting him to seek intervention through the courts.
Ichung’wah said Gachagua would now have an opportunity to prove his allegations before a court of law, insisting that political statements must be backed by evidence.
He argued that claims linking him to attempts to manipulate electoral officials were meant to damage his reputation and cast doubt on the credibility of the election process.
The Majority Leader dismissed the accusations as a sign of panic, claiming Gachagua was making unfounded allegations after realizing his preferred candidate faced a difficult contest in Ol Kalou.
He maintained that voters should be allowed to make their decisions freely without intimidation or misinformation.
The move to sue Gachagua adds a new legal dimension to the growing political rivalry between President William Ruto’s allies and the former Deputy President, whose influence in the Mt Kenya region remains a major factor ahead of the 2027 elections.
Ichung’wah warned that political competition should not be used as a platform to spread allegations that undermine individuals’ integrity, saying the court process would provide a chance for truth to prevail.
