John Methu Names Four Opposition Leaders He Claims Could Challenge Ruto's Strongholds Ahead of 2027

Nyandarua Senator John Methu has reignited political debate after outlining four opposition leaders he believes could significantly influence Kenya's political landscape as preparations for the 2027 General Election continue to gather momentum.

In a statement shared on his social media platforms, the outspoken senator expressed confidence that the opposition is steadily expanding its influence across various regions, arguing that coordinated regional mobilisation could present a formidable challenge to President William Ruto's re-election bid.

Methu began by appearing to dismiss the political influence of one of President Ruto's allies, suggesting that despite recent public rallies, the leader was yet to experience the realities of a fully competitive political campaign.

According to the senator, large public gatherings alone would not guarantee electoral success once official campaigns begin. Using sarcasm, he claimed that political fortunes can change rapidly, adding that leaders must prepare for more demanding political battles as the election draws closer.

His remarks included the metaphor that "the trees have become slippery," a phrase many observers interpreted as suggesting that the political environment is becoming increasingly unpredictable for those aligned with the Kenya Kwanza administration.

According to the senator, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua remains a significant political figure in the Mt. Kenya region, where he continues holding meetings with supporters and engaging local leaders.

He also pointed to Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, saying the ODM Secretary General has generated considerable political excitement in Western Kenya through a series of well-attended public rallies and grassroots engagements.

The Nyandarua senator further highlighted Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, expressing confidence that the veteran politician could consolidate opposition support across the Ukambani region as political campaigns gain momentum.

Completing his list, Methu cited former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, arguing that the former security chief could strengthen opposition support in the Kisii region if he continues increasing his political engagements.

In addition, Methu mentioned veteran journalist-turned-politician Mohammed Ali, popularly known as Jicho Pevu, suggesting that the former Mombasa legislator could also play an influential role in mobilising support at the Coast.
