The exchange between Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua took a fresh turn on Thursday after the two leaders differed over claims surrounding the June 25 demonstrations.
While addressing the media at Harambee House, Murkomen responded to Gachagua's earlier statement on the protests, dismissing the allegations before giving the former Deputy President a new label.
The Interior CS described Gachagua as a "clout chaser", saying he often makes major national events about himself.
"Most of those things he was talking about, saying he was going to be assassinated, he's a clout chaser, so every public event that is of great interest, he likes making it always about himself," Murkomen said.
He also accused Gachagua of engaging in ethnic politics, adding that he overlooks the role played by other senior security officers, including Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja.
"He quickly forgets there is a police IG called Douglas Kanja and he just likes talking of the deputy because his mind is wired tribally," Murkomen stated.
The Cabinet Secretary further linked Gachagua's political style to the events that led to his impeachment, saying he had failed the constitutional test of patriotism and national unity.
Murkomen's remarks came hours after Gachagua claimed in a statement that state-sponsored goons had been planned for the June 25 demonstrations.
The former Deputy President also thanked Kenyans who stayed at home, saying the move helped prevent loss of life and destruction of property.
The latest remarks add to the growing public exchange between the two leaders, with each maintaining a different account of the events surrounding Thursday's demonstrations and the claims of goons. Follow us The Public Eye for following updates.
