Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichungwah has urged Nyanza residents to back President William Ruto's re-election bid in 2027, invoking the late Raila Odinga's decision to join the broad-based government as evidence of endorsement.
Speaking to voters in the region, Ichungwah argued that Raila's participation in Ruto's administration was a deliberate political calculation aimed at positioning ODM for power.
"Late Raila Odinga left you inside this Broad Based Govt because he saw it is ODM true path to power," Ichungwah stated.
The Kikuyu legislator suggested that the opposition cannot offer voters anything Ruto's coalition has already delivered.
He challenged the opposition to match the President's ability to build consensus across ethnic and political lines, arguing that the broad-based government model is the most effective governance structure available to Kenyans.
Ichungwah's remarks add another layer to the ongoing competition for Nyanza, where political realignment following Raila's death in January 2025 has left the region fragmented across competing power centers.
The MP's invocation of Raila's legacy is a calculated move—framing the late opposition stalwart not as a rival to Ruto, but as a pragmatist who recognized the broad-based government as the optimal vehicle for his party's advancement.
