Kenya is bracing for another round of protests over the planned establishment of an Ebola quarantine facility in Laikipia County.
Organisers have announced fresh demonstrations scheduled for Tuesday, June 9, urging Kenyans to turn out in large numbers to oppose the project.
Residents of Nanyuki Town have intensified their resistance to the proposed facility at the Laikipia Air Base, vowing to sustain pressure until the government abandons the plan.
Speaking during a press conference on Thursday, local leaders warned that the facility poses a serious risk to surrounding communities, accusing the government of pushing ahead without adequately addressing public concerns.
Recent survey data by Geopoll shows widespread opposition to the proposal, with 71 percent of Kenyans rejecting the US-supported Ebola quarantine facility. Of these, 61 percent expressed strong opposition, largely driven by fears of possible disease transmission.
However, the survey also indicated that 54 percent of respondents still support broader Kenya-US cooperation on infectious disease management.
The renewed calls for protests come amid heightened tensions following last week’s demonstrations, during which two people were reportedly shot dead.
