Former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party has filed a legal suit against President William Ruto’s government, demanding the release of KSh16 billion in unpaid political party funds.
In court documents, Jubilee alleges that the government has withheld its allocations from the Political Parties Fund dating back to the 2017/2018 financial year.
The party is seeking conservatory orders to block disbursement of current funds to other political parties until the arrears are settled in full.
Jubilee argues that the state has deliberately undermined its operations in violation of the Political Parties Act, which mandates that at least 0.3 percent of national revenue be set aside annually to support political parties.
The legal showdown escalates ongoing political tensions between Kenyatta and Ruto. Recently, Uhuru publicly criticised the administration, urging the President to tone down political rhetoric and focus on addressing the rising cost of living.
Ruto’s ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has pushed back, accusing Uhuru of leaving behind a struggling economy saddled with high debt, inflation, and weakened institutions.
Neither the Treasury nor the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal has publicly responded to the lawsuit.
With Jubilee demanding full payment before any other party receives fresh disbursements, the case could trigger wider funding disruptions. A court date is yet to be set.
