Political analyst Herman Manyora has advised National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula to think twice before joining local politics in Bungoma, especially if his younger brother, Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, goes for the governor’s seat.
Speaking during his weekly political show, Manyora argued that the two brothers risk destroying each other’s chances if they compete for county positions at the same time.
He noted that such a move would hand their opponents an easy path to victory.
“If Wetang’ula insists on running while his brother is in the same race, they will spoil it for each other. In the end, both will lose and their rivals will take advantage,” Manyora explained.
The analyst advised Wetang’ula to instead support his younger brother’s ambition to become Bungoma governor while he focuses on cementing his influence at the national level.
According to him, Wetang’ula’s political weight is far greater than a county race, and he should avoid lowering his profile.
“Wetang’ula is a sharp and calculating politician. If I were him, I would let my brother go for governor with my full support and I would focus on a national position. Anybody who dismisses him is underestimating his game,” he added.
Manyora went on to highlight Wetang’ula’s role in shaping Bungoma’s voting patterns during the 2022 elections.
He said Wetang’ula’s decision to break ranks with Raila Odinga and rally his community behind William Ruto was a turning point in the presidential race.
“Without Wetang’ula’s support, Ruto might not have made it to State House. The Bungoma vote was crucial, and Wetang’ula delivered it,” he said.
The analyst reminded his audience that Wetang’ula still holds considerable power within national politics, and any attempt to retreat into local contests would be a miscalculation.
He argued that Wetang’ula’s future lies in larger leadership roles, not competing with his brother in Bungoma.
Interestingly, Tim Wanyonyi himself has in the past advised his elder brother not to return to county politics, warning that it could mark his downfall.
