Kenya National Examinations Council Opens Training Opportunity for Teachers in Item Writing Starting April

The Kenya National Examinations Council has announced a one-week online training programme aimed at equipping teachers with essential skills in item writing, as the country continues to embrace competency-based learning in schools.

In a notice released on Tuesday, March 31, KNEC stated that the training will begin on April 20, 2026, and will target both classroom teachers and teacher trainers.

The programme is designed to help educators develop high-quality, learner-centred assessment tools that align with modern curriculum demands.

According to the council, the training will focus on improving the ability of teachers to design reliable and effective examination items for use in both basic education and teacher training institutions.

This comes at a time when the need for well-structured assessments has increased with the ongoing implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) across primary, junior, and senior school levels.

KNEC further revealed that participants who successfully complete the course will receive certification.

In addition, they may be considered for future opportunities to work with the council as contracted professionals.

This provides teachers with a chance to earn extra income while contributing to the development of national examinations.

To qualify for the programme, applicants must meet several requirements. These include being registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), having at least three years of teaching experience, and demonstrating strong subject mastery.

Applicants must also be actively teaching in primary, junior, or senior schools, or working in teacher training institutions offering diploma programmes, including Special Needs Education.

In addition, candidates are required to show familiarity with relevant curriculum designs and must hold appropriate academic and professional qualifications.

A formal recommendation from the head of their institution is also mandatory, ensuring that only credible and practicing educators are selected.

KNEC emphasized that the training is strictly for new applicants. Teachers who have previously undergone item-writing training with the council have been advised not to apply, in order to give others a chance to benefit from the opportunity.

The application process is entirely online, with interested candidates required to submit their details through the official KNEC portal. The deadline for applications has been set for April 13, 2026, giving teachers a limited window to apply.

This initiative comes shortly after the government’s recent recruitment of thousands of teachers to address staffing shortages in schools.

The training is expected to complement these efforts by improving the quality of assessments and strengthening the overall education system.

Education stakeholders have welcomed the programme, noting that enhancing teachers’ skills in assessment development is key to ensuring that learners are evaluated fairly and effectively.

As the education sector continues to evolve, such initiatives are seen as critical in maintaining high standards in teaching and learning.

Teachers interested in advancing their professional skills and contributing to national assessments are encouraged to apply before the deadline.
