Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has alleged why former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his opposition colleagues canceled a planned protest to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja's office.
In a social media post on Monday morning, February 20, Wambugu trolled Gachagua, claiming that the DCP party leader pulled out of the scheduled march because he feared a poor turnout.
According to Wambugu, who is a frequent critic of Gachagua, the ex-DP feared he would be embarrassed by the low turnout, which would not have reflected well on his political ambitions.
"For those wondering why Jofri canceled the ’maandamano’ he had called to the IG’s office, he realized he was going to be properly embarrassed by the number of people who would turn up," Wambugu wrote.
The remarks by Wambugu followed the decision by Gachagua and his united opposition partners to shelve plans to march to the IG’s office.
In a joint statement issued on Thursday, February 19, and signed by Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Gachagua, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, and Jubilee deputy party leader Fred Matiang’i, the coalition said it would no longer engage directly with IG Kanja.
The United Opposition argued that the planned protest was not only unhelpful but also a disservice to Kenyans.
The group noted that the police force was allegedly under the influence of certain political leaders, and that a march to the IG’s office would not change this.
The opposition had visited the IG’s office twice in the past, seeking answers over the alleged use of police by government-allied politicians to disrupt their rallies.
They had threatened to stage protests at the IG’s office. Instead, they opted for legal action against two MPs and twelve police officers, whom they claim were involved in a chaotic incident last month when Gachagua and his allies attended a church event at Witima ACK Church in Othaya.
