"We Can't Defeat Ruto with Gachagua's Mindset" Wanjigi Dismisses Opposition's Wantam Unity

Safina Party leader Jimmy Wanjigi has dismissed claims that the opposition is united under the Wantam banner, saying the narrative exposes a lack of clear vision and agenda.

Wanjigi argued that opposition leaders are focusing too much on political negotiations instead of addressing the real challenges facing ordinary Kenyans, including unemployment, high taxes, and the rising cost of living.

He urged opposition figures to abandon what he described as tribal and regional coalition politics, warning that such alliances are outdated and ineffective.

The Safina leader specifically dismissed efforts by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to form an opposition coalition, terming it a regional alliance unlikely to succeed on a national scale.

Wanjigi, who has declared his intention to run for president in 2027, said that removing President William Ruto from power cannot be the sole foundation for opposition unity.

“We talk too much about uniting to defeat Ruto. That is not a foundation,” he said.

He warned that any coalition that fails to address the economic grievances that sparked nationwide protests will not survive.

Speaking in an interview with Taifa Leo, Wanjigi said Kenyans want practical solutions, but political leaders remain trapped in what he termed negotiation politics instead of listening to the people.

He predicted that the 2027 General Election will be shaped by economic issues, not ethnicity or regional alignments, adding that protests against the 2024 Finance Bill amounted to a mid-term referendum on the current administration.

On ODM’s cooperation with President Ruto, Wanjigi said he does not support the move but left the door open for dialogue.

“However, if ODM distances itself from Ruto, we can have a conversation,” he noted.
