Why Kindiki’s 5-Word Social Media Message Sparked Reactions From Kenyans Online

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki surprised many people when he posted a short message on social media: "Pride comes before a fall…"

Even though it was only five words, the post quickly caused a lot of reactions online. Many Kenyans felt that the message was not random. Instead, they believed it was directed at his predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua.

The post came just hours after the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate, Leonard Muthende, won the Mbeere North by-election on 27 November 2025.

This by-election was not just a normal political race. It had turned into a proxy battle between Kindiki and Gachagua, two powerful leaders from the Mount Kenya region.

During the campaigns, the two leaders openly criticised each other. Kindiki campaigned strongly for Muthende, also known as Leo wa Muthende. He accused Gachagua of using insults and dividing people.

At one rally in Kanyuambora, Kindiki even said, "I will deal with you," which showed how tense things had become. He also warned that he would reveal Gachagua’s failures and “silence” him politically through the vote.

On the other side, Gachagua supported Newton Karish of the Democratic Party (DP). He accused Kindiki’s camp of interfering with the election and even claimed that some people were trying to influence voter registration by collecting ID cards from young voters. Gachagua also warned against intimidation and told voters to make their choices freely.

After Muthende won with 15,802 votes against Karish’s 15,308, Kindiki’s five-word message appeared online. Because of the timing and the earlier arguments, many people believed the message was aimed at Gachagua, suggesting that he had "fallen" after the loss.

The message came at a sensitive moment, after a heated political contest, and many Kenyans saw it as a direct jab at a political rival.
