Firebrand lawyer and political commentator Miguna Miguna has made history after issuing a rare public apology to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, marking a dramatic turn in their long and often heated exchanges.
Speaking during a live interview on a local television station, Miguna acknowledged that his previous remarks towards Gachagua were harsh and uncalled for.
He admitted that some of his statements were based on misinformation and emotion rather than fact.
“I want to sincerely apologize to Hon. Rigathi Gachagua. I may have been too critical in my approach, and in hindsight, I realize some of my comments were unfair,” Miguna stated. “Leadership requires humility, and today, I choose humility.”
The apology caught many Kenyans by surprise, as Miguna has built a reputation for being unapologetically outspoken, often taking on top political figures without restraint.
Social media erupted soon after the broadcast, with many hailing the move as a sign of maturity and reconciliation in Kenya’s political discourse.
Close allies of Gachagua described the apology as “a bold and commendable gesture,” saying it could pave the way for unity and mutual respect among political leaders and commentators.
While Gachagua has not yet issued a formal response, sources close to him indicated that he appreciated Miguna’s courage to admit his mistakes publicly.
Analysts have termed the moment historic, noting that it reflects a shift in tone from Kenya’s typically combative political culture.
Miguna’s gesture, they said, could inspire more accountability and civility in public debate.
