Big Blow to ODM as Prominent Member Opens to Working with Gachagua if Demands on Ruto Persist

Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly (MCA) Robert Alai has expressed willingness to work with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, signaling a potential political shift within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as Kenya’s 2027 elections draw closer.

Speaking during an interview in Nairobi on Tuesday, Alai said he would not oppose collaboration with Gachagua if ODM’s leadership formally pursues that path.

His remarks come amid growing speculation that opposition figures are exploring broader alliances to counter President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration.

“I have no personal issue with Gachagua. If ODM decides that engaging him serves the interests of the people, I would support that direction,” Alai said, adding that the party should remain pragmatic and open-minded in forming coalitions.

The statement sparked mixed reactions within ODM ranks, with some party loyalists insisting that any alliance talks should align with the party’s long-term values and reform agenda.

Others view Alai’s remarks as a reflection of changing political realities, especially after recent overtures between Mt. Kenya and opposition leaders seeking a united front ahead of 2027.

Gachagua, who has recently re-emerged in the political scene following months of silence, has been calling for “unity and reconciliation” among political rivals, signaling openness to working with leaders outside Kenya Kwanza.

Political analysts believe Alai’s position underscores growing uncertainty within ODM over its future alliances, especially as the opposition continues to reorganize following Raila Odinga’s transition to continental politics.

Meanwhile, ODM officials have yet to issue a formal statement on the matter. However, sources within the party indicate that informal consultations are ongoing across different political blocs to explore strategic partnerships that could reshape Kenya’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 General Election.
