Ruto’s Camp on Edge as Uhuru Kenyatta Allegedly Plans 2027 Return

A close aide to President William Ruto has sparked political debate after claiming that former President Uhuru Kenyatta is quietly plotting a political comeback ahead of the 2027 general election.

Speaking during a political rally in Nakuru on Thursday, the aide alleged that Uhuru — who retired from active politics in 2022 — has been holding a series of private meetings with political leaders and influential figures across the country, signaling his renewed interest in shaping Kenya’s political future.

“Uhuru Kenyatta has not truly retired. He is reorganizing his old network and funding certain political movements to destabilize the Kenya Kwanza government before 2027,” the aide said. “We are aware of his meetings and strategy sessions with opposition figures.”

The claims come amid growing speculation about Uhuru’s increasing visibility in national and regional affairs.

The former president, who has largely maintained a low public profile since leaving office, recently made several public appearances at key national functions and has been involved in peace initiatives within the East African region.

However, political analysts are divided over whether Uhuru could realistically return to active politics.

Some view the allegations as part of Kenya Kwanza’s attempt to rally its support base by painting the opposition and retired leaders as threats to government stability.

“Uhuru Kenyatta’s return to politics would be unprecedented but not impossible,” said political commentator Mark Bichachi.

“The former president still commands influence, especially within Mount Kenya, where there’s growing dissatisfaction with the current administration.”

Allies of the former president have dismissed the claims, terming them as baseless and politically motivated.

“President Uhuru is a statesman focused on peace and unity, not on political comebacks,” a member of his close circle said.

If true, Uhuru’s alleged return would reshape Kenya’s political landscape, particularly in the Mount Kenya region, where his influence remains significant despite his fallout with Ruto during the 2022 elections.
