Nairobi police officer, previously commended for swiftly apprehending Ian Njoroge after he allegedly assaulted a fellow officer, has found himself on the other side of the law.
He is among the four police officers and two civilians who had been apprehended for robbing Ksh.2.2 million from a school accountant in Utawala.
The officer, whose name has not been disclosed, was celebrated for his quick actions in the viral arrest of Njoroge. However, recent developments have cast a dark shadow over his reputation.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspects are believed to have trailed Rophine International School's accountant from a bank in Utawala on Monday before breaking into his car and making away with the money.
Reports have emerged that the same officer, along with his associates, has been arrested for their involvement in a daylight robbery in Nairobi.
"A total of Sh473,000 believed to be part of the stolen amount was also recovered from the six, who were ambushed in the station's official police vehicle."
DCI says that the money was intended to settle salary arrears for casual labourers at the school.
The robbery targeted an accountant at a local bazaar, resulting in the theft of approximately Ksh 2.2 million. This revelation has stunned the public and raised serious questions about the integrity of law enforcement in the city.
During the Monday incident, the 6 trailed the accountant from the bank until when he parked the car outside the school.
The officer and his accomplices were apprehended at the Kasarani police base, where detectives recovered a portion of the stolen cash.
The accountant is said to have entered into the school with a portion of the money and upon his return to collect the rest he found the car had already been broken into.
The suspects, three of whom are a police sergeant, a corporal, a constable from Kasarani Police Station, and a police constable from Ruai police station were rounded up in Kasarani Police Station's parking yard.
"They identified as Sgt Antony Ndegwa Anwal, Cpl Daniel Lekakeny Sunkuli, PC Simon Macharia Maina (of DCI Kasarani), PC Antony Mwenda (KPS Ruai), Lukas Magwaga and Young Wakise," said DCI.
