Drama unfolded at the Kitui Governor’s office last week when an attempt to repossess a car turned violent.
The incident took place on Thursday, June 6, around 7:30 pm when officials from Al Hiram company arrived at the office to reclaim a black Mazda, registration number KDM 015J, owned by Melid Margaret, a county employee.
The officials, Geoffrey Edali, Hassan Haji, and Adan Abdullahi, were on a routine mission to repossess the vehicle due to outstanding payments.
However, as soon as they started their task, they were confronted by a group of about five men. According to a police report filed at the Kitui Police Station, these men, described as "goons," tried to stop the officials from taking the car.
The situation quickly escalated into a chase, forcing the Al Hiram officials to run towards the office gate for safety.
The commotion drew the attention of police officers Joan Ruguru and John Mutai, who were on duty at the Governor’s office. They managed to rescue the three Al Hiram staff members from the attackers.
In the ensuing struggle, officer Joan Ruguru sustained a serious injury when one of the attackers bit her on the right index finger, resulting in the loss of the fingertip.
She was immediately taken to Kitui Referral Hospital for treatment and later discharged in fair condition.The Al Hiram officials also suffered injuries during the clash.
Geoffrey Edali, the team leader, was struck on the right shoulder with a blunt object and sustained another soft tissue injury on his left shin. Hassan Haji reported back pain from the incident.
The black Mazda, the cause of the conflict, was eventually towed to the Kitui Police Station. The police have launched an investigation into the attack. They are trying to identify and apprehend the men who assaulted the officials and injured the police officer.
