The National Police Service has recovered four guns after a raid at a home in Lodwar village of Kabachi Location, Mutuati Subcounty, Meru county.

The seizure comes as preliminary reports from local security agencies indicate illegal firearms dealers smuggle into the country between two and four weapons every week.

Police recovered two G3 rifles, a Mini Beretta, a Carbine AK47, 22 rounds of ammunition and other crude weapons.

The man who was transporting the firearm jumped off his motorcycle in Japata along Meru road and fled into a nearby maize plantation after police officers tried to arrest him.

According to NPS, the Office of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations is probing the incident.Police said an operation is underway to arrest the suspect who escaped during the raid.

County Police Commandant said the officers found the arsenal wrapped in a sack, adding that the man was among suspected individuals involved in illegal weaponry trade.

"The National Police Service would like to thank members of the public who made this intelligence-led operation a success," NPS said.

The recovery comes in the wake of rising cases of motorcycle robberies by a well organised gang posing as business people in Kitale and Bokwo towns.
