“I Still Don’t Believe my Hubby Died Like That Before My Eyes Without Saying a Last Word to Me. This Pain Will Never pass," Wife of Assassinated Haiti President Speaks Ahead Of Kenya Police Deployment

The wife of assassinated Haitian President Jovenel Moise has spoken for the 2nd time since gunmen stormed the couple’s home in Port-au-Prince, saying the attack that killed her husband happened “in the blink of an eye”.

“I still don’t believe that my husband has gone like this before my eyes without saying a last word to me. This pain will never pass,” Martine Moïse wrote in a translated message.

Martine Moïse said the attack happened so quickly, her husband Jovenel was unable to "say a single word".

In an audio message posted on her official Twitter account on Saturday, Martine Moise called on Haiti not to “lose its way” after the attack that left her critically injured.

Mr Moïse, 53, had been president of Haiti, the poorest nation in the Americas, since 2017. His time in office was rocky as he faced accusations of corruption and there were widespread demonstrations in the capital and other cities earlier this year.

“I am alive, thanks to God,” Martine Moise said in Creole in the audio message, which Haiti’s minister of culture and communications, Pradel Henriquez, confirmed to the AFP news agency as being authentic.

Parliamentary elections should have been held in October 2019 but disputes have delayed them, meaning Mr Moïse had been ruling by decree. He had planned to hold a referendum on the proposed constitutional changes by then.

“I am alive but I have lost my husband Jovenel,” she added.

One prominent opposition figure has openly expressed scepticism over the current version of events. Former Haitian senator Steven Benoit told local station Magik9 radio on Friday it was "not Colombians who killed him", but did not provide evidence to back up his claims.
