DCI Expose Faces Of Four Burundians, One Kenyan Arrested With 151 Stolen Mobile Phones In Kisii

Kisii County, Kenya – In a recent operation, police arrested four Burundian nationals and one Kenyan, uncovering a significant cache of stolen mobile phones. The suspects were apprehended in Nyakongo Estate on Thursday, sparking a detailed investigation into their activities.

The arrested individuals include Birori Benard, Biziman Alain, Kubwiman Fideli, and Hakizimana Janviel from Burundi, along with Enock Mokaya, a Kenyan national.

They were found with 151 mobile phones suspected to be stolen, comprising 60 M-Kopa phones and 91 regular phones. These devices are believed to have been stolen from various individuals.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has been actively pursuing this case, aiming to understand the extent of the theft and the network involved.

Initial reports suggest that the suspects planned to smuggle these phones to neighboring countries, potentially to resell them.

The arrest came as a result of vigilant police work and community cooperation. Residents in Nyakongo Estate noticed suspicious activities and reported them to the authorities, leading to the swift action that resulted in the arrests.

The police have commended the public for their vigilance and assistance in this matter.

According to the report filed at Kisii Police Station, the suspects were caught red-handed with the stolen phones.

This seizure is a significant breakthrough in curbing the increasing trend of mobile phone thefts in the region. The police believe that dismantling this network will lead to a reduction in such crimes.

M-Kopa, a popular mobile phone brand in Kenya, allows users to pay for their phones in installments. The theft of these phones not only affects the victims but also disrupts the financial model that M-Kopa operates on, impacting their business and customer base.

The DCI has assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway. They are looking into the origin of the stolen phones, potential accomplices, and the intended smuggling routes.

The police are also urging anyone with additional information to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
