Three young siblings, aged between 11 and 13, have taken the bold step of suing their mother. The children, who lost their father in 2017, claim that their mother abandoned them and sent them to live with their grandmother after she remarried. The children allege that their mother, Hadja Nabutono, expelled them from their family home to make way for her new husband.
Their father, Sepiriano Omoding, a traditional healer, died at the age of 75, leaving behind a widow, eight children, a 15-acre piece of land, and a permanent family house. The situation took a drastic turn after his death when Nabutono decided to remarry.
According to the children, their mother forced them out of their home in February, just as the school term was starting. This sudden move disrupted their education; the eldest child had completed Primary 7, while the younger ones were in Primary 6 and Primary 4. Desperate and determined to seek justice, the children walked from their grandmother’s house to the local children's office in Kayunga District. Along the way, a sympathetic man gave them KSh 1,700 for transport.
Upon reaching the children’s office, the siblings explained their situation to District Probation Officer Collins Kafeero. They recounted how their mother sent them away to live with their grandmother after bringing a new man into their late father's house. The children stated that their mother insisted they refer to the new husband as their "father," which strained their relationship and led to accusations of disrespect.
Village LC Chairperson Annet Awinjo confirmed the children’s story, noting that Nabutono had indeed expelled them and was living happily with her new husband in the family home. The children asked the authorities to remove their stepfather from their late father’s house and to ensure that their mother takes responsibility for their education.
The eldest child shared his dream of becoming a motor vehicle engineer, while his younger siblings hoped to join the police force. These aspirations have been overshadowed by the distress caused by their mother’s actions.
When contacted, Nabutono accused the children of being undisciplined and rebellious. She claimed that they had dropped out of school and posed a threat to her and her new husband.
Kafeero assured the children that he would work with local leaders to ensure they received justice. This case highlights the challenges faced by children in blended families, especially following the death of a parent.
