"If I Could Turn Back The Wheel of Time, I Would
Change Everything. I Would Have Accepted Mike's Request to Become a Devil
Worshipper. Life Has Been Cruel To Me. I Know Now that I'm Allergic to
Poverty" Eldoret Woman Says, Regrets Choosing The Good Side of Humanity
Life comes at you so quickly that before you know it, you are in your sixties,
retired, alone and having to endure back problems.
Which begs the question; if you could go back
in time, be young again, would you do anything differently??
Catherine Kiplagat believes so. She opened up to me about
an incident in 2002, at only 26, when a random man approached her in Eldoret
town, near the old Postal Office, requesting her to join Freemasonry. Catherine
declined. Mike promised her then, that she would never sleep hungry, that she
would be rich and possibly famous, but at the expense of not having children.
She has four kids now, but says that she regrets choosing
the current path. After years of struggling, paying school fees and watching
her kids go through unemployment, she admits that maybe, just maybe, she should
have accepted the generous man's offer. Catherine says that her kids still call
her, to send them money. None of them has secured reasonable employment, which
meant that Catherine has to continue fending for herself, fetching, faking,
feigning contentment, feeling frantic and fractured. It hasn't worked out the
way she thought it would. At 47, she is still poor, in mind and in spirit.
I felt sorry for her. Her small shop looks like it is
hanging by a very thin thread. She says she will close it and start a salon,
but lacks the capital or the motivation for it. She is giving up, slowly.
Watching her bleed from the inside hurt. I wasn't fairing any better myself,
but at least I had a husband, who tries. It's not a lot, but he tries.
Catherine doesn't have anyone. Her Husband left her in 2020, during the
pandemic and has never left Mombasa, where he is married to a Maimuna.
Words no longer have any effect on Catherine. You can prepare a speech, throw
in a few quotes by Martin Luther King Jr, but she won't even smile. Nothing
surprises her anymore.
Fortunately, I managed to surprise her yesterday when we
both won a huge bet of Kshs. 896, 323. I begged her to place the bet. Over the
years, she has effectively become a pessimist. She reluctantly agreed. I
obtained a recommendation from an uncle of mine to contact a traditional
herbalist called Dr. Mugwenu for Luck, Money and Success spells. For the first
time ever, Catherine smiled. She knew exactly what to do with the money. As a
mother, she even sent her kids some. Thanks to Dr. Mugwenu, joy, rather than
regret, is now permanently plastered on her face.
