Eddie Butita, a popular Kenyan comedian and close friend of President William Ruto, has publicly rejected the Finance Bill 2024. This comes after he faced significant online criticism for not speaking out against the bill sooner.
Butita’s silence on the controversial bill led many to accuse him of supporting the government due to his close relationship with President Ruto.
The Finance Bill 2024 has sparked widespread debate and protests across Kenya. Many believe the bill is unfair and would negatively impact citizens. As a result, several public figures, including Butita, have been pressured to take a stand.
Butita, known for his comedic talent and his involvement in politics, was notably silent, which caused frustration among his fans and the public.
Responding to the backlash, Butita took to social media to express his views. In a long post on X (formerly Twitter), he explained why he believes the bill is flawed.
Butita emphasized that leaders should listen to their constituents and understand their struggles. He argued that the current political system is disconnected from the needs of ordinary Kenyans, and the Finance Bill, in its present form, would not benefit them.
Butita wrote, "I understand the frustration and disconnect many feel with the current system. It is clear that we need a proper structure to ensure our voices are heard and represented effectively.
Often, our leaders lose touch with those they represent. The results are what is happening currently."
Butita, who recently accompanied President Ruto on a state visit to the US, clarified that he has always been committed to addressing the concerns of the public.
"The Finance Bill, as it stands, is not okay. I played a role in submitting my concerns, and I will do it again when needed because I am a citizen and a businessman.
I want the best for my country mates, family, friends, and colleagues," Butita stated. He concluded his post with a firm declaration, saying, "I, Eddie Butita, #RejectFinanceBill2024. It is time to listen. We cannot all be wrong."
