A recent TikTok video by a Kenyan woman named @Wayua has gone viral after she shared her frustrating experience of being overcharged by a boda boda rider.
In the video, she recounted how the rider charged her KSh 700 for a short trip from Afya Center to Railways, within Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD). Typically, this journey should cost between KSh 100 and KSh 150.
@Wayua’s TikTok post, titled “Tutakutana” (meaning “we will meet” in Swahili), highlighted her displeasure with the exorbitant fare. The video included a song with lyrics suggesting that they would meet again, implying her intent to address the overcharge.
Many viewers resonated with her story, sharing their own experiences of being overcharged by boda boda riders in Nairobi. The distance between Afya Center and Railways in Nairobi is relatively short.
Under normal circumstances, it should cost no more than KSh 150. However, @Wayua’s experience of being charged KSh 700 shows a growing issue of unfair pricing in the boda boda sector, especially in the CBD where such rides are common.
Viewers of the video expressed a range of reactions. Some were shocked by the high fare, while others shared their own stories of being overcharged for short rides.
For instance, a user mentioned paying KSh 200 for a ride from Tearoom to Railways, while another was charged KSh 300 from Archives to City Hall.
These stories indicate that @Wayua’s experience is not unique and that overcharging is a widespread problem.
Many commenters on TikTok suggested that @Wayua and others in similar situations use ride-hailing apps like Bolt. These apps provide fare estimates before the ride, helping passengers avoid being overcharged.
