On June 28, 2024, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen addressed accusations of funding ongoing anti-government protests in Nairobi.

Allegations arose from a manipulated social media post, which purportedly showed Murkomen offering money to mobilize protesters.

In the widely circulated screenshot, a social media account impersonating Murkomen seemingly engaged a user to rally a group for a demonstration at the State House.

The fake account allegedly promised Ksh500,000 to incite the crowd. “I see you have a significant following. I would like us to work together for the betterment of our country,” the post read.

The recipient of the message, as shown in the doctored screenshot, demanded Ksh1 million, claiming they needed funds for protective gear and expressing a desire for a more substantial reward.

Murkomen quickly responded to these claims through his X account (formerly known as Twitter). He called the screenshot a hoax and labeled the content as propaganda. “Fake! Good people, ignore this propaganda,” Murkomen tweeted, urging Kenyans not to be deceived by the misinformation.

These allegations against Murkomen come amid a tense political climate in Kenya, marked by recent anti-government demonstrations.

President William Ruto has publicly condemned the violent actions of some demonstrators who masquerade as peaceful protesters, emphasizing that such behavior is unacceptable. “It is not in order, or even conceivable, that criminals pretending to be peaceful protesters can reign terror against the people,” Ruto stated earlier in the week.

The protests in Nairobi are part of a broader wave of dissent against the government, particularly targeting the contentious Finance Bill. Demonstrators argue that the bill imposes unfair taxes and deepens economic hardships for ordinary Kenyans.
