A 19-year-old student accused of assaulting a police officer on Kamiti Road and stealing a communication device was reportedly manhandled by police, the court heard.
Njoroge was flushed out of a house in Jacaranda Estate. He was reportedly looking for help to move from his house after he discovered he was wanted.
Ian Njoroge, who appeared before Milimani Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi on Tuesday, was arrested hours later in Kayole, Nairobi.
Nairobi's head of traffic, Vitalis Otieno, stated that the suspect will face multiple charges, including attempted murder.
"The officer who is the complainant in this case manhandled the accused inside his car," defense lawyer Duncan Okatch told the court.
According to a statement from the police, the incident, which took place on Kamiti Road at Mirema Junction, left the officer injured and receiving medical treatment.
Okatch further informed the court that the officers who arrested Njoroge at his mother's house manhandled him, causing him to faint twice.
The police officer, Corporal Jacob Ogendo, was on duty managing traffic at Mirema Junction when he observed a motor vehicle making an illegal U-turn, causing obstruction to other road users.
At the police station, the lawyer stated that the officers beat Njoroge, and his clothes were stained with blood.
Approaching the vehicle, Corporal Ogendo saw it hit the road kerb and had got stuck.
"The officers took photos. He is young and still innocent. Please grant him bail," Okatch urged the court.
Taking action, he entered the vehicle from the front passenger's seat and instructed the driver to proceed to the police station.
The court also heard that the officers confiscated Njoroge's mobile phone and student ID.
As the vehicle reached opposite Quick Mart, the driver unexpectedly stopped and drew a sword from under the seat.
"They should be returned. The police should not treat the accused as a dog," said defense lawyer Lempaa Soyinka.
Corporal Ogendo quickly exited the vehicle for his safety, but the driver followed, attacking him with blows and kicks.
"He was escorted to court by 21 police officers. We will be requesting documentary evidence and CCTV footage," Soyinka added
