President William Ruto has openly criticized Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for his recent comments about the future of the Mt Kenya region. This disagreement has highlighted emerging cracks within the top leadership of the country.
The controversy began on May 31, when Deputy President Gachagua, speaking in Kikuyu during a thanksgiving ceremony at Mutonyora Comprehensive School in Njabini, warned the residents of Mt Kenya about a gloomy future.
Gachagua claimed that certain individuals were sowing seeds of disunity among the people, predicting difficult times ahead. His remarks followed days of praying and fasting, where he seemed to reflect a sense of pessimism about the region's prospects.
However, President Ruto, speaking during an interdenominational church service in Bungoma County on June 2, offered a starkly different perspective.
In a direct rebuke to Gachagua's statements, Ruto assured Kenyans that the country's future is bright and promising. He urged the public to ignore leaders who spread messages of despair, referring to them as "prophets of doom."
"The future of our nation is great. We are a great nation. We are a blessed country. And you should not accept people who are prophesying darkness and a bleak future. And I am asking our bishops to pray so that those tongues stop," Ruto said. His Swahili phrase, "Hizo ndimi zako zikome," roughly translates to "Let those tongues stop," indicating his strong disapproval of Gachagua's dire predictions.
Ruto emphasized the need for unity and focus among the country's leaders. He highlighted Kenya's improving economy and growing respect on the African continent and worldwide as reasons for optimism.
"This nation is going places. We are respected in Africa and worldwide because our economy is improving. I am confident about the future of Kenya. What we need is to stay united, focused, and to plan properly. Ignore the prophets of doom!" he added.
This public disagreement between the President and his Deputy has stirred conversations about the stability and coherence within the country's leadership. It also raises questions about the political dynamics in the Mt Kenya region, a key area in Kenya's political landscape.
Observers note that such public disputes can have significant implications for the administration's ability to govern effectively and maintain public confidence.
