In the days following an approval by the United Nations for Kenya to send its police officers to Haiti to restore order in a country that has been run over by armed gangs, its most feared gang leader, Jimmy Cherizier, led a protest against the deployment.
Haiti’s most dangerous gang leader, Jimmy Chérizier, alias "Barbecue," sent a message to Kenyan police and military on Friday ahead of the deployment.
Barbecue’ noted that any external forces, included the planned deployment of 1,000 police officers to Haiti to restore security will be met with fierce aggression.
During a press address, Barbecue declared that he would regard Kenyan police as aggressors and vowed to resist them.
According to 'Barbecue’, peacekeeping troops will only worsen the situation as they are not familiar with the intricate context of the rivalry behind the wave of violence and insecurity in the country.
Barbecue labelled the Kenyan police as invaders, asserting that he was not prepared to cooperate with them as he believed they were coming to interfere with Haiti's independence.
The gang leader claimed Kenyan police and international bodies have a perception that they will be fighting armed gangs and bandits, leaving little room for the gangs to cooperate engage through dialogue in finding an amicable solution.
'Barbecue' maintains that the 1,000 police officers Kenya intends to send on a peace-restoring mission in Haiti would be met with fierce aggression by the gangs since they will be perceived as 'invaders' who pose a threat to the lives of innocent Haitians.
This year alone, the U.N. human rights has reported that over 1,500 people have been killed including many children, while dozens have been lynched, stoned or burned alive by so-called self-defence brigades.
"Kenya stands ready and willing- in concert with a broad alliance of nations in Africa and CARICOM- committed to Haiti's stability, to rapidly execute the security support," the head of state added.
