A tragic accident claimed the life of a Catholic priest on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway near Karai area, Naivasha. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening when the priest, whose identity is yet to be disclosed, was crossing the busy highway.
Eyewitnesses reported that the priest was crossing the road around 10 p.m. when a lorry traveling from Nairobi towards Naivasha hit him. The impact was severe, leaving the priest fatally injured on the roadside.
The lorry briefly stopped after the collision, but the driver quickly sped off as nearby residents rushed to assist the injured cleric. Unfortunately, their efforts were in vain, as the priest succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
James Kabono, a representative from the Naivasha Road Safety Association, expressed concern over the rising number of pedestrian fatalities on this stretch of the highway.
He pointed out that several areas, including KCC, Mithuri, Kayole, Karai, and Raini centers, have become hotspots for accidents, particularly during the morning and evening hours. Kabono emphasized the need for enhanced safety measures to protect pedestrians.
According to reports, the priest was on his way back to a residential home that accommodates several Catholic priests in the area. The news of his death has shocked the local community and raised alarms about road safety.
In a separate but equally tragic incident, the rising waters of Lake Naivasha claimed another life. A middle-aged man drowned after accidentally falling into a flooded borehole in the Kihoto estate.
The man was walking through the flooded estate when he slipped and fell into the well, unable to be rescued by bystanders.
The rising water levels in Kihoto estate have flooded homes, latrines, and boreholes, posing significant risks to the residents. Village elder Sam Mbuthia highlighted that nearly a third of the estate is now underwater, raising fears of potential disease outbreaks in the coming weeks.
Naivasha OCPD Stephen Kirui confirmed both incidents, noting that the bodies had been taken to the local mortuary. Inquest files have been opened for both cases to facilitate further investigation.
