The government has demolished the renowned Khetia's Supermarket building in a move aimed at expanding the Masinde Muliro Stadium in Kanduyi, Bungoma County.
The demolition took place overnight on Saturday, May 4, leaving Kanduyi residents surprised when they woke up to find the building already brought down.
The purpose behind the demolition was to clear the area for the expansion of Masinde Muliro Stadium, which spans an impressive 40,000 acres according to government plans.
The ongoing construction of the stadium is in full swing, with completion expected before June 1 to host the upcoming Madaraka Day celebrations.
As the demolition unfolded, youths gathered at the site to scavenge for remaining scraps and other essentials amidst the rubble. Despite their efforts, police officers remained vigilant, monitoring their activities as they searched for salvageable materials.
Khetia's Supermarket, previously housed in the demolished building, has since vacated the premises and is operating in another location.
The expansion of Masinde Muliro Stadium signifies a significant development for sports enthusiasts in Bungoma County.
This demolition follows a similar incident where the government demolished the iconic Mama Uhuru building in Kariobangi along Kangundo Road.
The demolition, which occurred on January 11, affected 136 units, mainly single rooms, owned by the late Maumau freedom fighter Mwanaisha Bilali's family.
